NH House: TWO Gun Control Hearings
On Wednesday, January 28th, the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee will hold two gun control hearings at 1 Granite Place (Room 159) in Concord.
Information about the two gun control bills is below, as well as how you can act to let the committee know your opposition to the bills.
Possession of Firearms on School Property
House Bill 1034 not only violates federal law, but it prohibits public schools from hiring armed guards to protect the schools. The bill is written so poorly, it then says public schools can hire armed guards in the next sentence. Which is it?:
“All public schools shall be prohibited from employing persons whose sole purpose is to serve as an armed guard for the school. Public schools shall only be permitted to employ an armed guard where the candidate for the position would otherwise be qualified to work with students in a public school, including the satisfaction of a criminal background check.”
This bill would make it impossible for women who carry a firearm to protect themselves and their children from an abusive ex or a stalker, especially women who walk their children to school. Of course, a woman could ask permission of the school board to carry a firearm on school grounds, but a majority of people know how that would work out.
The Gun-Free School Zone Act allows individuals who possess a pistol/revolver license, to carry concealed firearms on school grounds. That has been federal law since the early 1990s.
Criminals have NEVER obeyed the Gun-Free School Zone Act. In fact, school shootings have increased since this act was implemented because criminals know there is no one at a school to protect the innocent children inside.
This new gun control measure turns law-abiding citizens into criminals. It would be a Class A Misdemeanor if you violate this new law, which means you would become a prohibited person and lose your 2nd Amendment Rights.
Storage Requirements for Firearms
House Bill 1049 is an attempt to make the storage of firearms more draconian. It requires locking devices for all firearm sales (including used firearms, private sales, barter sales etc.). So if you give one of your firearms to a friend or family member and you don’t provide a locking device, you will be guilty of a Class B Misdemeanor. NOTE: All brand-new firearms already come with locking devices.
The bill also makes changes to the existing law – 650-C:1 Negligent Storage of Firearms – and adds criminal charges, along with existing fines, for improper storage of a firearm if a juvenile uses said firearm in a manner other than self-defense etc. If a juvenile gets a hold of a firearm and injures themselves or others, you are guilty of a Class A Misdemeanor and become a prohibited person according to federal law. You lose your 2nd Amendment rights.
There’s no need for this. NH isn’t the Chicago inner city where it’s normal for juveniles to illegally get and use firearms to kill each other on a daily basis.
Once again, the gun control crowd is trying to push more draconian laws for a problem that doesn’t exist in the Granite State.
TAKE ACTION
What can you do? Show up to these two gun control hearings. You don’t have to speak, you can simply sign in your opposition and listen to the hearings. Arrive earlier than the 10:30 AM timeline as the other hearing may finish sooner to be sure to get a seat. They do not allow standing in the committee hearings due to fire hazards.
You can also email and/or call the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee Members to show your opposition to the legislation:
